Gas scrubbing

Gas scrubbing consist of solubilising a gaseous pollutant in a liquid. This liquid can be either vater or water with a reagent or a solvent. There are different types of gas scrubbers and Europe Environnement manufactures three types/models

  • random packed scrubber
  • spray gas scrubber
  • venturi scrubber

The choice of which type/model to be used depends on the characteristics of the gas to be removed.

Filration by an adsorber consists of trapping the gaseous pollutants on the surface of a porous solid. Depending on the compound that is treated, the adsorber to use is either standard activated carbon for VOC's, inpregnated activated carbon for some gases, zeolit for odours...

The biological treatment of gases is at the moment an increasingly important method. The process of bio-filtration consists of using bacteria to degrade the gaseous pollutants biologically. The system that is mainly used is the bio-filter, in which the polluted gas passes through porous surface on which the bacteria are set (peat is generally used). Europe Environnement has many references in the bio-biltration sector and has started research on bio-scrubbing.

Odour control system for sewage treatment plants works through a 3 stage chemical wet scrubber:


  • The first scrubbing tower removes ammonia and amines using sulphuric acid.
  • The second scrubbing tower removes hydrogen sulphide and mercaptans using sodium hypochlorite and caustic soda.
  • The last scrubbing tower (optional) is a polishing tower to complete removal of hydrogen sulphide and mercaptans using caustic soda only.
